When I curated the collection Halloween Jewelry Perfect for Everyday of the Year, I purposely did not include any Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) items. The reason: Halloween and Dia de los Muertos are two different holidays. Dia de los Muertos, once celebrated on October 31st, now begins on November 1st and ends on the 2nd. The holiday is a celebration of the lives of those now dead. Families visit grave sites, bring items the deceased loved ones enjoyed, such as food and drink, and generally turn the remembrance into a time of joy.
Over time the symbols of Dia de los Muertos have been depicted on various items. A simple search will pull up tens of thousands of hits. I picked my top favorite items for celebrating this holiday and traditions, from jewelry to clothing, and household goods. These symbols of the dead remind one of the celebration of life. I hope amongst the Halloween festivities you will find time for Dia de los Muertos as well.
