Last year, I curated That's F#@%ing Delish, Man! (An Irish Mix) , a playlist entirely compiled of bands / musicians born in Ireland (or became an Irish citizen). The mix avoids the cliches of continuous bagpipes and highlights wonderful music from the Emerald Isle. This mix of 70 songs is still up and available to enjoy this St. Patrick's Day, I myself will enjoy it along with my annual tradition of Black Velvets .
However, I understand many want to celebrate without all the Irish tradition. Or they might be too busy to listen to an entire mix. For those I pondered the perfect drinking song, one that will only take 3 minutes and 54 seconds to enjoy: Tom Wait's I Hope That I Don't Fall in Love With You.
You may remember, Tom Waits My Soundtrack to Winter, but the truth is, he one of the key artists in my soundtrack of life. Closing Time, which includes I Hope That I Don't Fall in Love With You, is one of my favorite albums. It is comfort when I need it, like a old friend and I Hope That I Don't Fall in Love With You is one of those key components, sandwiched between O' 55 and Virginia Avenue.
The song features lines such as: "Last call for drinks, I'll have another stout" or "I had a beer and now I hear you calling out for me." It is a song about love, loneliness, and melancholy and every emotion in between. It has all the elements of an old school country song, but instead of of the old twang, you get the sultry, slightly gruff, but always distinctive voice of Tom Waits. In the end, no matter who you are, you want him to fall in love with you.... or at least buy you a stout.
Give it a shot by listening below (uploaded from my personal copy of Closing Time) and let me know what you think. Is it the perfect drinking song? Maybe not for everyone, but for me it truly is.
Happy Saint Patrick's Day - but remember drink responsibly and be respectful. Sláinte!
